Mathabo High School visits Computer Foundation

1 February 2001

Late last year, Computer Foundation was host to 53 Grade 11 and 12 students from Mathabo High School in Kwa-Kwa, who came to gain insight into geographic information systems (GISs). The educational outing formed part of the school's career guidance programme.
Teacher Cecilia Leseso, comments: "We want our pupils to be aware of major technologies in the computer world. The kids found the day fascinating and quite a few pupils have expressed an interest in pursuing a career in GIS."
Wilhelm Herbst, Managing Director of Computer Foundation, comments: "Educating the youth of our country is one of the methods Computer Foundation uses to prepare more people for the critical shortage in skilled GIS users.
"Our efforts in this regard dovetail with our social investment program, in which unemployed people and students are trained as GIS operators, and then employed in projects all over the country."
Computer Foundation has trained more than 300 people over the last three years, of whom a considerable number have been employed by other GIS organisations.
