Internet access to Oracle8i Spatial

1 February 2001

Oracle let loose the proverbial cat amongst the pigeons with its move from 'relational to object relational'. Data had to be migrated, interfaces updated and the whole issue of connection to Oracle8i, Spatial had to be addressed. AfriGIS, one of the industry leaders in GIS related software development and an Oracle Spatial partner, has embraced this shift.
AfriGIS has announced the completion of one of the first RWAD (read, write, add and delete) interfaces to Oracle8i. The component, aptly called the Spatial Query Wizard (SQW), allows users to integrate Oracle8i into their applications by simply using the SQW in their applications. The component was written in Visual C++ and uses the native Oracle drivers to ensure fast access to the database. The SQW also allows for the downloading of information from Oracle8i to a Windows CE powered handheld device.
The component has successfully been integrated into AutoCAD Map, Autodesk World and Autodesk MapGuide, Caliper's Maptitude and a custom viewer, allowing RWAD access to an Oracle database via the Internet.
The benefits of having such access to Oracle8i is that one can now share data between different software packages and even across multiple platforms using the Internet. Information can be exchanged, modified and updated across an organisation's LAN, WAN, intranet or the Internet.
