ECW support expands to Macintosh-based applications

1 February 2001

ER Mapper has announced the creation of a Macintosh ECW software development kit (SDK), expanding support of the enhanced compressed wavelet (ECW) compression format to desktop publishing programs running on Macintosh operating systems. The first version of the SDK includes compression and decompression capabilities. Macintosh is the leading operating system for desktop publishing and design. With the ECW SDK, designers now have the ability to store and transmit much larger image files than ever before.
The SDK allows third-party developers to add support for ECW files to Macintosh-based applications. The first version of the SDK will be released by the end of the first quarter 2000.
"This new SDK further broadens access to ECW," said Stuart Nixon, CEO and founder of Earth Resource Mapping. "Macintosh users, especially professionals in publishing, medical imaging and photography, rely heavily on the ability to conveniently view and use large amounts of imagery. Now they can reap the benefits of this groundbreaking technology just as PC users have."
Later versions will incorporate URL support and threading functions. As with all SDKs from Earth Resource Mapping, the open standard ECW Macintosh SDK will be available royalty free.
The SDK will be available for free download on the ER Mapper website at www.ermapper.com
