Locally developed electricity management application wins international award

1 November 2001

Electricity Management System (EMS) from MunSys Technologies received a welcome accolade at the recent Autodesk GIS Bootcamp in Sitges, Spain earlier this year. The locally designed and developed application, part of the wider suite of spatial applications collectively called MunSys, was awarded 'Most Innovative AutoCAD Map Application' at a gala awards evening during the conference.
For MD and developer, Chris Tolken, the award is yet another indication that the hard work in developing the MunSys package is paying off. "Our rationale behind the development of MunSys was that local government needed a solution that avoided the pitfalls and difficulties associated with traditional systems and methods of data capture. EMS in particular was designed to streamline the data capture and maintenance of electricity networks. The key to the success of the system being the extreme ease of use and the built-in business rules that ensure data integrity," he said.
EMS was designed on top of AutoCAD Map and both the spatial and attribute data is stored in an Oracle 8 database. EMS allows for the accurate placement of nodes and cables along cadastral boundaries and caters for EHV, HV, LV, streetlight and service networks. The data capture process is very simple and easy to work with and much faster than that employed in traditional systems. This means that an operator can obtain hierarchical information about where the electricity for a specific point is supplied from at any point in the network.
The complete MunSys system is an enterprise software solution specifically designed for local government and utilities and it comprises six fully integrated packages covering the full spectrum of municipal requirements. All the applications share a common database, are extremely user-friendly and reduce support and training requirements.
