Intergraph selected to rate GIS initiative

1 February 2002

Intergraph Mapping and GIS Solutions recently announced that the Direccio General de Carreteres (DGC) in Barcelona, Spain has chosen its GeoMedia technology as the platform for its new corporate GIS.
Project implementation will be a joint venture between Intergraph Spain and SYSIGSA, a local engineering company and a Team GeoMedia Registered Solutions Provider partner.
The DGC's corporate project is the first component of a larger planned GIS system within the Catalan Public Works Ministry and Land Planning. The web-based and client/server-based GIS will assist DGC with road management mobility planning, security traffic assessment, pavement maintenance, and road network planning. The current project comes in four modules and is in development. The first module is scheduled for the beginning of 2002 with the remaining modules operational by year's end.
DGC's choice of GeoMedia technology supports the need for accurate data model definition following the GTF (Geo Transportation Format) and GDF (Geo Data Files) standard transportation models. Several GeoMedia products will be used including GeoMedia professional, GeoMedia transportation, GeoMedia Transaction Manager, and GeoMedia WebEnterprise as well as Intergraph's Dynamo product for cartographic generalisation and what-if analysis.
The new system will accommodate a wide range of users including engineers, administrative technicians, road guards, and maintenance crews. The DGC anticipates the corporate GIS will improve sharing of information and applications, result in a better work environment, and increase employees' knowledge about road networks, security, and mobility. In addition, the system will optimise public investments with the delivery of more efficient and effective services to citizens.
The DGC directly manages more than 5500 km of roads in Catalonia and is responsible for their mobility, security, quality, and maintenance and is further responsible for a total of 12 000 km of roads regionally for their mobility planning.
