AfriGIS develops vehicle monitoring and tracking system

1 February 2002

Geographical Information System (GIS) provider AfriGIS has developed a web-based vehicle tracking solution for LeQ, a company that specialises in global satellite tracking services. The solution will enable LeQ to provide their customers with global vehicle monitoring via the Internet.
LEQ has invested in globally accepted data (no voice) LEO (low earth orbit) and GEO - Inmarsat satellite constellations and related application products and technologies, which are the generic building blocks of future system engineering and-value added network solutions.
The company provides global connectivity to major organisations in the refrigeration, security and mining industries, which are involved in the transportation of high-value cargo and goods.
"The system offered for transport operators is based on a global two-way data satellite communication network complete with GPS systems," explains Jurgens Els, technology development director at LeQ. "It is ideally suited for low-cost cross border fleet management systems utilising an on-board terminal, which communicate via the satellite and internet networks to the customer's PC."
AfriGIS developed the GIS Internet mapping and reporting solution using the Maptitude application, a powerful combination of software and geographic data. "The application provides everything an organisation needs to realise the benefits of desktop mapping and spatial analysis," says Nico Schoeman, Project Manager at AfriGIS.
