Open Spatial Solutions transfers GIS skills down under

1 October 2002

Local GIS specialists company, Open Spatial Solutions is breaking international ground in the transfer of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) skills to Australian spatial information users.
Open Spatial provides fully intelligent electronic mapping systems that deliver versatile mapping and geographical analysis solutions to clients ranging from national, local government and corporate organisations. The company was recently contracted by its Australian-based sister organisation, Open Spatial Technologies (OST) to supply training and skills transfer to users of the MunSys suite of spatial data management applications.
According to the company, the award winning MunSys product set, developed in South Africa by MunSys Technologies, is fast making inroads into the Australian local councils and utilities market through OST. Martiens Pelser, managing director of Open Spatial Solutions, comments: "The growing international demand for MunSys, backed by the powerful skills set of Open Spatial Solutions as MunSys' marketing, implementation and support partner, confirms the world-class status of these all-South African offerings. It also demonstrates MunSys' ability to be suitable to meet the individual needs of international councils."
International recognition of South African GIS skills furthermore opens up new revenue streams for local GIS companies, both for contract work overseas as well as for project work done locally, on behalf of foreign customers, he believes. "Our exchange rate makes this an attractive option for overseas companies, who are realising that they can expect superlative service from South African GIS solution providers."

Jacki Roberts, Open Spatial operations manager who was seconded to Australia to provide the training, confirms that she received excellent feedback on the quality of instruction given. During Roberts' visit, she also provided consulting services to Tamworth, a large city council in New South Wales, which recently decided to go the MunSys route. "Back in South Africa, we are now in the process of conducting a large data conversion project, which will convert all Tamworth's core data including cadastral data, water, sewerage, roads, planning and electricity, into Open GIS MunSys format."
In addition, an Australian Open Spatial Technology expert accompanied Roberts to South Africa for three weeks, during which time he underwent further training and knowledge transfer as well as provide assistance on the data conversion project.
